“Is this going to feel dated in five years?”
At Allison Smith Design, that is one of the first questions we ask ourselves on every project. Your home is your sanctuary, and we consider it a privilege to design it in a way that feels beautiful not just today, but for many seasons of your life to come.
Trends can be fun, of course. We have happily woven Modern Farmhouse, maximalist color, and all kinds of “of the moment” ideas into our Portland-area projects. But we are always doing it through the lens of timeless design, creating spaces that tell your unique story rather than simply repeating what is popular this year.

So what makes a space timeless?
Timeless interior design is not a specific style, such as traditional, modern, eclectic, or coastal. It is a quality. It feels balanced, thoughtful, and personal. The lines are clean, the proportions are right, and the materials have a history of looking good over and over again. Think stone, wood, classic metals, well-tailored upholstery, and color palettes that do not scream a particular decade.
Because we work on full homes and large-scale remodels, we often advise clients to go classic with the pieces that are hardest to change. Flooring, cabinetry, countertops, built-ins, and major furniture are where timelessness really pays off. These are your “bones.” When those are grounded in enduring materials and shapes, the house can evolve gracefully around them as your life and tastes change.

Color is another area where timelessness matters. Certain hues instantly call to mind specific eras, such as olive and rust from the 70s, mauve from the 80s, or the gray craze of the 2010s. That does not mean you can’t use color. In fact, we love it. But for longevity, we tend to keep the most permanent surfaces (tile, large-scale upholstery, millwork) in neutrals that age well and reserve the bolder statements for paint, art, rugs, and pillows. Those are easy and far less expensive to refresh when you are ready for something new.
So why do we sometimes gently steer clients away from fully trend-forward design?
Because trends move faster than most home remodeling budgets. By the time an interior decorating look has hit every big box store, it is often at its peak and about to start receding. If your entire kitchen, for example, is built around a very specific and heavily Instagrammed look, there is a good chance you will be itching to redo it long before the cabinetry wears out.

More importantly, chasing trends often means diluting your own story. When we design, we are not trying to make your home look like our style, or a TV show, or your neighbor’s. We are trying to make it look like you, your travels, your heirlooms, your rituals, and the way your family actually lives. Those are the pieces that never really go out of style, because they are rooted in your real life, not in what is currently in the spotlight.
That said, “timeless” does not mean boring, safe, or stuck in the past. A home can feel current and fresh without being trendy. We often do this by using classic foundations such as beautiful wood floors, tailored upholstery, and simple cabinet profiles, then layering in “of the moment” touches with lighting, accessories, artwork, and smaller furnishings. If you love a look that is everywhere right now, we will find smart, flexible ways to incorporate it without tying your entire home to that one moment in time.

In the end, our role as interior designers in the Portland area is to help you navigate all of this with confidence. We will always be honest about where it makes sense to indulge a trend, and where you will thank yourself later for choosing timeless design instead. The goal is a home that still feels like you, only more pulled together, more welcoming, and more deeply personal, years from now.
That is the real beauty of timeless interiors. They do not just age well, they grow with you.
