Eccentric Glam in Southeast Portland

This young, professional family was relocating to Portland from Seattle. The house was very much a blank canvas of good bones, neutral walls, loads of white trim, and standard fixtures – the kind of home realtors love to list because a wide variety of buyers can “envision” themselves living there. But our clients had a deep love of pop culture and art that they wanted to celebrate and share with everyone visiting their home.

As a family, they spend a lot of time listening to albums on their record player, doing puzzles, and otherwise engaging with the arts. The design challenge here was to create a united space that was family (and pet) friendly, allowed them to enjoy their pursuits and display their various pop culture pieces.

We embraced a bold, dark teal for this long and narrow room, including the ceiling! We blanketed the ceiling in a glossy finish and installed this funky and eclectic chandelier. Enough storage to corral their album collection, books, and games was a huge priority. We used the built-ins, but also extended the storage with portable crates. The bookshelf is a “controlled chaos” of books, movies and other collectibles.

Because the walls are such a statement, the furniture was kept mostly neutral, but gold accents make this eclectic room also feel glamorous.
